I'm creating a response to this because this is a hill that I'm willing to die on.
A poll was posted a while ago suggesting to bring back cracked mode, this suggestion was abruptly closed despite it having a 55% majority support (55 total votes). Later on, apparently it was privately decided to reconsider it and put back cracked mode, but then another suggestion was posted suggesting to keep the server in premium mode. This suggestion was locked when it was at 42 votes, and "yes" was leading with 52% support. Both of these suggestions would be considered controversial by those metrics although the later one had a closer margin and 13 less total votes, more of a virtual split between the community. Regardless, Seth closed it and decided that cracked mode would be tried out so that we could collect statistics on whether it was actually damaging to our player base to use it or not, a fair compromise and it should've been left at that for us to observe results and optimize the cracked mode experience.
Around this time, I posted a suggestion which was on file until today which had much more of a consensus (albeit less total votes due to lack of relevance, although when you have a 3/4 majority on a poll with a high enough sample size that's completely indicative and if it wasn't then the entire scientific concept of sample size is called into question which goes way past the scope of this community) with a proposal which would prevent innocent players from getting punished because of what any potential imposters could do, a solution to the primary problem brought up and would be a better way of using cracked mode than any way we have tried in the 10 year history of this server. People agreed, but despite that, the suggestion was just unilaterally closed despite the support. Why? Not because there was a problem with the proposal, but because the developers can't figure out how to bungee a cracked server to a premium server (SMP).
So just because of something that we decided to do, with zero public discussion or polling, we're just going to say fuck it and sacrifice a feature for player freedom which we have worked this server around for the past fucking decade, because of one tweak the developers want to implement for an SMP server that isn't even currently released. Is this really the route that we're going down? A private decision to implement this and scrap the suggestion to offline mode, which a vast majority of people agreed would make the implementation of cracked mode a whole lot viable, just unilaterally executed against any community opinion. But hey, there we go, a unilateral decision to close a well-supported suggestion because of something that was privately decided that we want to implement, last I checked we already had a shitfest(s) over suggestions with huge support being denied.
Let's take a look at the bigger picture. We're already introducing a premium donator rank to the server and perks with it (which also goes against Minecraft's EULA from what I've heard, woohoo?) just to incentivize people to spend their money on this server, something that Mark was strongly against and founded this server on principles going against it, and now we're removing a key part of the server and feature for player freedom. Are we really just going to go down this path of removing everything this server stands for because of what seems interesting to us in the short term? Because if we do, I fear for the direction that we're going in and it does not seem like something that has been well thought-out and community-planned at all, this seems like unilateral execution of changes that go against what this community has stood for over the past 10 years and I'm certainly not a fan of it.
Go ahead and post a reply if you agree or disagree with this unilateral power execution to force the direction of where this server is going into, because this really is not what this server has stood for and I can't even believe we're going down this path.
