First time posting to deep discussion, here we go,,,,,, www.zdnet.com/article/github-to-replace-master-with-alternative-term-to-avoid-slavery-references/What are your thoughts on this? Personally I don't agree on eliminating the word master or slave. There are no slave branches. When you fork a repository or make a new branch, it's something like patch-1 or feature/fixtfm I think that it's stupid to treat these words as somehow deserving to be censored or never used. The actual slave and master concept, I see where you're coming from. Having a slave and master seems racist, but personally i think that if you're constantly thinking about how something can be considered racist, then you're just plain annoying tbh. people are just trying to get work done, and for snowflakes to come into territory they have no idea about and make it """"not racist""" is just plain annoying. im not going to let GitHub rename my branches for me, they shouldn't be touching my existing code or setup in any way. I'm not hosting illegal crap on GitHub, but if they're gonna make it seem like using master as a branch name makes you racist, I'm just gonna straight up host gitlab on my own server. this change seems extremely stupid and does nothing to address racism in any meaningful way.

Useless Silicon Valley virtue signaling. I don't think any big tech company (utterly dominated by non-black people, by the way) would give a crap if slavery was legalized let alone actual institutional racism, it's just what they decide to do without any preceding concern or outrage to make themselves look good while pissing people off.

"master-slave" is a general terminology used to describe a system where one computer or process controls all others, and those others unconditionally do what the master tells them to. There are no other words that accurately describe this relationship.

There are no other words that accurately describe this relationship. This isn't being what's used to describe branches on GitHub though. Besides, it's a pretty truthful way if describing how things work

Apparently Github weren't originally going to call the master branch a 'Master' and had adopted something else, it was only to try to make it easier for them to get people from one of their original competitors that they went down that route (Well that's what I read at work last week).
To be honest it shouldn't make a difference, it's down to the developers what they call their primary branch anyway, most use master / development / release or something like that, it's just a term.
It's the same way that whitelist / blacklist is no longer the terminology being used by the UK's NCSC and a lot of industry, it's now an Allow list or deny list. Which is also done because it makes more sense when translated word for word.

There are no other words that accurately describe this relationship. This is true, but irrelevant. SVNs do not use this system, there is no such thing as a "slave branch."

Haha, fuck yeah guys! Just a week after they announce this stupid fucking unnecessary change, now the entire GitHub frontend gets a nice stupid fucking unnecessary change.
Woohoo! The website looks like shit now! Scaling is now broken on normal 1080p monitors and square icons no longer exist! Yahoo! Yippee!
Why does every stupid fucking tech industry company have to force these garbage websites down our throat? They literally optimize these websites for mobile and then remove anything that makes it look even remotely decent on Twitter. Who is getting paid to design these bullshit frontends which throw any preexisting perfectly working UI/UX in the trash can? No opt-in, opt-out, they always force it. It's even fucking worse because GitHub is literally the website that you would expect to have top of the line desktop support, because who the hell is accessing it on their phone? You'd have to either be using it on a phone or an 8K fucking television for the scaling to look even remotely normal. WHY DOES EVERY WEBSITE FUCKING DO THIS SHIT.
All of these tech companies pushing minimalist UI/UX design need to fucking go bankrupt, I'm dead fucking serious. Every website and operating system does this to me. macOS? Looks like shit. Windows 10? Looks like shit. Linux distributions? Looks like shit (pretty much always have). Go back 2 damn decades ago and there's exponentially more creativity in anything than how it fucking is now after these unnecessary bullshit changes. Go to twitter.com. Go to youtube.com. Go to github.com now. EVERY WEBSITE FORCES THESE GOD AWFUL MINIMALIST FRONTEND CHANGES. It's like they copied the frontend from fucking GitLab. Even the Firefox logo is minimalist trash now. Everything I use has to be compromised by incompetent morons that should have never gotten an interest in human graphical interfaces. The ProBoards interface with this Night Sky theme even looks exponentially better than any of these modern tech industry frontends.
Circular icons. It's harder to fucking see commit history and branches. It's harder to even see commit messages because they hide it on old commits for some fucking reason. UI alignment is awful. SCALING. Too much JavaScript. Circular icons make every avatar look fucking ugly, GitHub avatars aren't even OPTIMIZED for circular icons so it's just a trash change. There is too much whitespace. It's all rotten and needs to be damned and taken out, but it won't be, because no tech company listens to feedback.
I don't know what the fuck they do, do they get some hipster douchebags off the street and optimize their frontend to their douchebag specifications of how human interfaces should look? Who actually likes this shit? It's objectively a minority opinion that any of these websites look good.
Fuck the tech industry, and fuck the new GitHub interface.

Flat design poorly serves users and more often than not is implemented when a company doesn't want to hire or continue paying graphics designers. It's definitely become a trend in the previous ten years, one which I hope soon dies out. Not only are flat design languages ugly as shit, but the plain simplicity of them makes it a must to follow design specifications exactly on any page, or advertisement, or document — this is never done, because companies implement new features or change protocol without consulting the people who created that language to begin with. People have noted this for a very long time and it seems this has only gotten worse with commoditization of over-the-top websites.
