Discuss. I already have a multitude of reasons why I think 'murica sucks huge dick, but I wanna hear what you guys think.
(Btw, this is my non-factual and obviously flawed opinion.) For starters, I think it should be mandatory that schools and primary institutions teach proper emotional intelligence to our future generations. This is probably a horrible take, but I find that America's average IQ is jokingly low because kids and young adults don't know how to think for themselves and have to rely on conforming to one-sided societal norms instead of healthily dissecting and acknowledging their problems.
American schools kinda just teach you how to be a worker and conform to the societal status quo, giving you the false illusion of free will when most times your career path is decided upon by your capacity to sit still and listen to instructions. For the people who are woke enough to understand and seek out real life lessons instead of dated curriculum, this isn't really a problem since you're smart enough to know what happens next after school. But the people who follow the herd for the illusion of safety and stability, they're left with a false sense of free will when at the end of the day, you've only been trained to sit, listen, and do meaningless shit that has little to no impact in your life. It's probably better in different schools, but from my experience our educational system is unbelievably depressing.
Go to school and learn how to conform for 12 years > Graduate > Pick a career because it makes good money > ?? > Die This is kinda how life is for people who aren't motivated or passionate enough to decide their career prospects based on interests alone, and choose "money" as an end goal.
From my experience, my school(s) never once taught me the meaning of individualism. I was only taught how to shut up and listen, and be urged to take on meaningless careers that "set you up for life" because they're lucrative, when that actually means "Go be a pawn and be useful so you can live". It's like our primary function is already decided the minute you're signed up for public education. Go be obedient for a decade, then do "whatever" you want after you graduate with limited information we've taught you. Which is close to nothing, other than basic literary skills and middle school level comprehension. Remember to secure a high paying job or else you'll die of starvation and will never be able to afford that "cheap" $2500 a month apartment! Don't even worry about health insurance; if it's important then we'd teach you that in school :^)
College and Universities are cool though. Obviously still flawed, but at least you aren't COMPLETELY forced to be a sheep.
dumb rant over. someone comment about betsy devos and i'll flip my shit again.

Can anyone relate?

standardized testing is also stupid dumb imo. it's gatekeeping the people who are less intelligent than others when their way of measuring "intelligence" is already fundamentally flawed.

Giving scholarships for athletics is stupid imho. From personal experience: These fucking dumb fucks are star football players and get horrendous grades. They still get massive scholarships to top universities despite doing horrible in school. Also, "Physical Education" is retarded. It doesn't teach you anything (this is NOT health class) and is basically a way for the aforementioned athlete kids to be dicks and basically play whatever they want for an easy A while being unfair to those who are not athletic.

And also mental health, I believe it is as valuable as physical health education and it can make a huge difference if you go in depth rather then briefly skim over what mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are.

In the UK, or really in my school, we have individual 'sets' for PE based on your skillset. so if you're fat, you're with the fat kids. This is an advantage actually as you don't get judged

So I'm going to college to teach. We'll see which subject (thinking of switching to Health Education, you'll see why here). So, going on from this I'll highlight key words so lazy readers like myself (no judgement) know what they might go and read going forward in my post. TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of mental health disorders including depression and anxiety, mentions of suicide, mentions of sexual health and rape. I have so many terrible experiences from (public) school that I'm pretty sure it's the reason I have multiple mental health issues (depression, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety). You're FUCKED if you don't go to preschool, from what I've seen. Most people I know who didn't go to preschool were behind socially, if not scholarly. If you don't know anyone your age by your first year into public school then you're an easy scapegoat and target. So my first issue is that preschool shouldn't be optional, it should be a form of public school. (I know there are financial/tax issues with this, but I want to stay off that topic for the purposes of this thread) It can easily come down to what teachers I had, I got really unlucky. But I became a " troubled child" because of the constant bullying causing my to lash out, nobody believed I was being bullied until I got to Middle School. Nobody even believed me when I felt sick or had migraines, which, turns out that it runs in my fucking family. Also, it is known that many times how we feel mentally can affect us physically. But abusive adults don't want us to know that. This has happened to so many people I know! I even once got yelled at because I didn't want to play with other kids during recess. What in the fuck?? I only had one good elementary school teacher, and luckily had them two years in a row. There's two educational parts of the elementary school curriculum I experienced that is fucking stupid. 1) CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. He wasn't the first one to discover the Americas and he was a murderous jackass. 2) They had us wear Native American head pieces in a way that just wasn't all that educational, but more so for shits n giggles. Going on after this, let me just mention a few other things fucked up with our educational system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Mental Health: Most times out of ten you will not learn that mental health is just as important as physical health. According to the Trevor Project, "Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24." HOLY. FUCKING. SHIT. This is NOT okay, obviously! In most schools here you won't be taught that you matter to anyone or that your important. As you (zevante) said, there is no individualism. Students are just numbers for a town, county, state, and the country to show off. The fact that I and many others feel like this is true is sad in of itself. We're taught (in elementary school at least) to find adults if we can't call 911 ourselves. We're taught how to not burn to death in a house fire. We're taught P.E. safety. We're taught the food pyramid and basic biology... But we aren't taught basic psychology. We aren't told who to talk to if we are really sad. We aren't allowed to have panic attacks in school because obviously the material you need to learn in order to do well on a test for is more important (this goes even past elementary school). The things we aren't taught in elementary school snowballs. It's unhealthy. We teach nutrition but we can't teach children that it's okay to be sad? That you might need help for wounds that nobody can see outside of your body? That those around us might be going through a lot, but they just need a better diet? These are just some reasons why the suicide rate is so fucking high. You can get bullied and you're not taught that being depressed is a sign you need to see a psychiatrist/therapist before you attempt to end your life. You can't take a day off from school unless you're in the hospital. There are no such things as mental health days to many school administrative bodies. God forbid you even take a day off for the flu, you have to take your test! I'll speak more on this in my next section. 2) Health Class: It fucking varies depending on where you live, especially with sex ed. Watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0jQz6jqQS0I'll be discussing sex education first here. What I learn in New York? I'm lucky to learn certain topics, especially in depth... but out country's sexual education still isn't ideal. Nobody really discusses LGBT sexual education enough. This includes how to make a female condom and use lube. Depending on where you live, at least in the US, you might not know the different body parts, how to use/put on a condom or use a dental dam, the definition of rape, HIV/AIDS, after care, etc. Students aren't (always) taught that your hymen can break without intercourse occuring, that they can say no and have rights, having sex doesn't make you a whore/slut, you can bleed during your first time, a penis can break... even though there's no bones in it, who to connect about pregnancy especially if you don't live in a supportive household, and what forms of birth control can be used. Not learning certain things can further damage someone's mental health.Second, let me mention mental health further. Once, again the education differentiates from place to place specifically in the US. Even where I live hotlines weren't discussed-- and there are many different ones and they might not be a good idea for everyone although someone may really need those numbers. There's ones to discuss different mental health disorders, suicide, alcoholism, drug use, and abuse even. Where I live we learn how there can be signs of a developing school-shooter, but I'm sure most places don't discuss it. Third, understanding what abusive relationships can look like. Even I don't remember discussing this in health, I know that most of the time someone who experiences abuse has to find out what abuse is after they've been abused. People aren't (usually) taught what emotional/mental abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, and/or physical abuse can mean. Once again, this can further damage someone's mental health.Fourth, statistics on different groups regarding different issues regarding health. Examples including disparities in poor health comparing different races. I feel like even letting students see for themselves how at risk their peers are (not just themselves) I think would be more helpful to students than if it was ignored and not discussed at all.And finally, fifth... Gender and Sexuality. Obviously this wouldn't be discussed in a bunch of areas in the US. But it doesn't mean that this can't be something added to Health Education curriculum in the future. I know that progress with this is a long ways away. But dysphoria and the lack of support students in this vulnerable group may have can severely cripple mental health and lead to suicide. 3) History Class: Once again it varies depending on where you live. What you learn about the Civil War is going to be almost opposite from Georgia to New York. I know this based on students from out of state discussing it in one of my college history courses and multiple professors' comments regarding this. And once again, Christopher Fucking Columbus. Fuck outta here with that. Minority group history is another issue with public school. Nobody knows anything outside of their own communities a lot of the time because they aren't educated about it. LGBTQ+ history, Islamic history, Hispanic histories, Jewish history, African history, Asian history, the difference between multiple religions (exs: sikhism and "witchcraft"), etc. I know in 9th grade in probably most high schools only teach the differences in religions to a certain extent, yet people should be educated further with these as it can lead to a lot of misinformation and confusion. What people in public schools learn (specifically in history class) is just for a grade for your school to compare. By the time you reach college there's bound to be culture shock. Professors can expect you to know every single thing about African history even though it isn't taught past the end of the slave trade. That's just one example I can think of rn. 4) Math Class: fuck you, gl paying taxes! Now, memorize the quadratic formula. There's ways to have kids learn math skills without making them freak out memorizing formulas and not using calculators. In the REAL world? You have a fucking calculator and formulas written down to look over at incase you forget. 6) Physical Education: No you can't go to the nurse because you have a migraine, do 4 laps! Ohhhh??? You don't play sports??? Sucks to be you, play with the athletic people you can't keep up with and are judged by. If you can't run like the track team, you're fat! What I'm trying to express here is how disadvantaged many students may be. Nobody should be expected to preform the same way as one another. 7) Arts: No. Go study the quadratic formula. You'll never get a job in music! Nice voice, but you're not going to college for singing are you? You'll never be like Van Gogh. Yeah, this is creative but can you play football? No? How unfortunate. The lack of arts limits a students abilities, creativity, and paths to take in the future. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I went off, yeah. I know a lot of you don't care about this stuff as much as I may. These are just things I've noticed and feel need to change. Obviously this all can't be done quickly and obviously there are worse education systems, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't look forward to a time where mental health disorders are caught before someone attempts to end their life. Health and History education are the most important to me, but I'm biased because I'm really interested in these areas. More importantly, we are all human. We should all be able to advocate for ourselves instead of poor mental health consuming us. Another thing I agree with zev about is that there is a really depressing problem with only preparing people for "the real world" instead of letting them live their life. Our lives shouldn't revolve around being useful to make our governments look good. Students shouldn't be numbers for said governments to show off. Also, I honestly don't think I've expressed myself well enough here even though this is a long post, so please ignore anything I said that you feel doesn't make sense, as these things I've talked about are more so based on my experiences and what I've gathered from those around me. I just think that if we could teach individualism instead of the herd, it could lead to less suicide rates. Who would want that?Sources: Trevor Project: www.thetrevorproject.org/resources/preventing-suicide/facts-about-suicide/

Schools literally teach you what to learn, not how to learn. If people are interested in the topic but not the other, you shouldn't have to jam it in their face.
Curiosity comes within. What the fuck are schools telling you what to love?
There are literally friends I met on the first day of middle school who ended up hating what they loved on the last day of high school.

It doesn't teach you anything (this is NOT health class) and is basically a way for the aforementioned athlete kids to be dicks and basically play whatever they want for an easy A while being unfair to those who are not athletic. I’m going to reply to this because I’m personally offended by a few parts here. I participate in an Upward Bound program at a local Uni here in my state. Several of the Uni football players are RAs/Counselors or whatever. They got scholarships to play football for this Uni. They are very good football players, and are in no means ‘dumb fuck’ It’s a false stereotype that athletes are stupid, I’m a football player, and a majority of the players on our team are skilled but also take AP classes and stuff like that. If you look into what most college football players go to college for, sure some of it may be like sociology or easy classloads or whatever, but some of them are even like astrophysicists and stuff. Now Phys Ed is different from school to school, but at my school we have a mandatory Lifetime Wellness class, no matter what. The football players also have to take it. Teaches CPR, and things you need to stay ‘lifetime well’ or whatever. The second part of the class is actual physical work but it’s nothing bad. My feelings on the actual issue of the thread is that the school system is flawed. I do not believe that classes should be aimed at a goal of a standardized test. Even the AP exams are rigged because it’s almost 100$ per test and if you have two, that’s almost 200, and if you have three, well, I think you understand. Also collegeboard is ran by actual children who go out of their way to fuck students over who even ‘think’ about cheating. Creating fake redditors, subreddits, and they even say that they could delete or change information on websites to throw students off during the test. In case you’re unfamiliar with CollegeBoard’s fucked logic, if you are suspected of cheating CollegeBoard has the right to nullify your test score (before, during, after you’ve taken the exam) and bar you from taking another AP class your whole life. Not so bad, except when you apply for colleges they also tell the colleges you cheated on the AP exam. This is detrimental and unfair abuse of CollegeBoard’s power. As someone who takes AP exams almost every year, it frightens me that one day my grade could just be nullified and all this could happen because they ‘suspect’ me of cheating. Now I’m sure this next one will be a surprise to you guys, but I also think the way that most schools go about punishing vaping or using marijuana. In my school, I would get in the same amount of trouble with a bag of cocaine as I would with having a bag of marijuana. It is also a mandatory 180 day expulsion. I think this throws good students off the right track, makes things hard for the better students and completely throws off the worse students. Otherwise, I think school has prepared me pretty well for the future. Beside the obvious, ‘oh yeah I’ll never need to know how to find the cosin of angle a when I’m an office jockey’ but I think we all feel that way. And another observation I’d like to put out there is the people who get these scholarships for sports are not lazy individuals. They’re hard workers who more than likely need the scholarship to do anything in life. Unless it’s tennis, than it’s useless.
