For some reason my experience with HP hasn't been the best laptop-wise.. always black screens Both my dad and I have had an hp laptop for at least a few years now and they've been great. Definitely better than other laptops but they can overheat but I don't usually use it on my lap (despite the name lol). In our experience, that is.

I don't recommend most laptop manufacturers honestly, and that includes HP and Acer. I suggest just buying a low-end Dell because that's what's going to be the most suitable for school/office for the price.

Watch me get hella hate for this, but I used to use a chromebook for my school work, if you get one with a little more on board memory and dual boot it with linux it's perfectly good and can have some convenience features like a touch screen

I can say from experience that Dell makes really good laptops. Samsung and ASUS will also do the job.

I bought a used 2014 MacBook Pro for around $750 (fully loaded). It was in great condition, only thing I'd recommend is opening it up and cleaning out the dust and applying new thermal paste. It's been working flawlessly for me as a replacement for my 2012 MacBook Pro. When I get a bit more time, I'll replace the battery and screen (since the screen has a ton of scratches, but you can only see it up close). I know a lot of people recommend the 2015 Retina as the best used Apple laptop, but I personally hate the Force Touch trackpad, so I opted for the 2014 one.
If you're looking for a PC, I fixed up a used ThinkPad E550 with an SSD and new battery (much cheaper than Mac hahaha). It performs extremely fast on Windows 10 (already has an i5 and 8GB of RAM, but RAM could be upgraded). It is a bit heavy, but very good.
As for a Chromebook, I personally have a HP 13 G1. It's extremely light, and has a very good keyboard *cough* Apple *cough*. Build quality isn't going to be amazing, but mine has definitely held up over time well, and it can if you take care of it.
