Your title is incorrect. CEO and chairman are two completely different things, Musk just happens to be both. He was almost voted off as the chairman, which is the head of the board of directors (shareholders). The CEO is the top manager of the company who deals with day-to-day operations. The CEO is accountable to the board of directors.

The vote was definitely not against him, as it was a unanimous decision to keep him as chairman. It's funny how Elon's recent accusations at the media just continues to be demonstrated by news media such as The Verge.

So let's fact check this.
He was not "almost voted off", it wasn't even close, a guy with less than 10 shares motioned this and a supermajority blocked it.
A similar thread title could be, "Gary Johnson almost elected President".
