If you take a look at the budget smartphone market right now, they've improved heavily in the past few years.
Take the Xioami Mi Mix 2, for example. It's a new budget phone with specs and a screen similar to an S8 at just over half the cost. Or the Oneplus 5, or countless other sub $500 phones.
The specs are amazing. Qualcomm 835's with 6+ GB RAM. I'm considering making the Mi Mix 2 my next phone. The only thing I'm concerned about is update frequency. I want security patches immediately, and I have yet to see a budget phone that will do this for me.
What are your thoughts, and what company do you think has the best track record with updates (excluding Google, ofc)?

iOS definitely has the best track record with security updates. Apple is the only company that dares to stand up to the FBI, NSA, CIA.

Privacy and security are some of the most important things to me in a phone, but I can't stand iOS's restrictions. Apple's ecosystem allows only those with Macs to make and compile apps. That is plain stupid, and because of it, I'll likely be switching. Android allows you to develop on any platform and to sideload for free. Not to mention, using whatever browser rendering engine you want. However, security patches take months to be pushed out, and Android is owned by arguably the biggest prying eye out there. Also, mibbzz , how have updates been on the opo/op5? If op stops supporting the phone, I'll probably just custom rom it.

For me it's privacy and security over making and compiling iPhone apps (it's also useful to know someone who can do it for you).

I agree, iOS is definitely more secure than Android (even though I use Android) and they definitely have some guts to say "fuck off" to a bureau like the fucking FBI.

The FBI can't do shit, it's the NSA and CIA that can actually do damage.

I recommend the Mi Mix. I currently own a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X and it's literally one of the most value-for-money phone I've ever had.

The iPhone SE is an amazing budget phone too. The Apple A9 SoC is more powerful than its specs make it seem. It also has L3 cache.
