I created this thread because I saw that the other debate threads that we have had have pretty much turned into shitstorms and then gotten locked. So, if you plan to start a deep discussion/debate thread, it's almost always a good idea to establish the following rules:
1. Don't personally attack another player on the board. That's a matter you can and should solve using PM.
2. Don't post anything inconsiderate. If you're posting a joke, make sure to explain that it's a joke in the original post. We don't want anyone being unnecessarily offended.
3. Do cite your sources for ideas. If I'm interested in an interpretation of an episode of MLP that Firestar_Drew brings up, I'm going to want to read up on it. It's nice to not have to do a comprehensive google about the subject.
4. The nature of this board implies that your ideas will be attacked. Don't be offended by others' attacks on your opinions. (Note: It's probably a good idea to make it clear that you're attacking someone's idea, not the person himself/herself. On the forums, people often mistake attacks on their ideas as attacks on themselves, so it's best to make an effort to stay out of that.)
5. If you want a productive discussion/debate, set up a statement that the thread should stay specific to. For example: "Unicorns are bad for the environment, and therefor, they should be hunted to extinction."
6. Define your terms in the debate. For example, "The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a unicorn as a horse-like creature that has a horn fixated on its skull and farts glitter. " If you don't do this, your debate is likely to wander off-topic.
7. Do set up burden of proof rules in your thread. Typically, you find that the burden of proof for a claim is on the one who makes the claim. For example, if I was arguing that unicorns cause more harm than good, I would set up BOP like this: "The burden of proof is on me/my supporters, because we make the claim." You can put the BOP on someone who argues against a claim, but keep in mind that BOPs should be (and often are) debated.
8. Obey common courtesy rules. Please don't spam a topic that you don't want to see discussed in an effort to close it down.
9. Use common sense. If you're going to be offended by a topic that others don't seem to be offended by, don't bother looking at it. If it's really an issue, PM a forum administrator.
Anyways, have fun. It's not like everyone is necessarily looking to have a productive debate, but I was hoping that I could help reduce the number of threads that end up locked in this board.
