What is now known as the Total Freedom server has been in continuous operation since Nov 11, 2010, and Minecraft was still in alpha (pre-beta) v 1.2.2. Just prior to the server opening, Notch had added the new realm known as the Nether, the "Hell" world with new blocks such as Netherrack, Soul Sand, Glowstone plus new mobs such as Zombie Pigmen and of course the Ghasts.
I decided it would be cool to open a Nether world public server and while Bukkit yet to be released, there was a mod called Hey0 with plugins such as World Edit to allow construction of earth material builds inside the Nether. Keep in mind that at time multiplayer did not allow teleportation between the Nether and the Earth. So we had two servers going at once; one being the Nether world that was run on a home server and the other, the Earth world being what we know now as the Total Freedom server on Multiplay. Here is the earliest known archive of the Total Freedom Information website: goo.gl/wRxh7
The Nether world was by far the most popular server while the Earth world was quiet but did attract people interested in building. Even before the name of Total Freedom came to be, the concept of allowing players maximum OP like privileges was in play - not usual for public servers then or now. In May of 2011, Minecraft was in beta and v 1.6 finally added the ability to teleport between the Nether and the Earth world in multiplayer mode. This effectively ended the need for two servers and so I closed the home server and the Earth server became Total Freedom. The video below shows Total Freedom as it was on Jul 17th, 2011.

In 2012, developers made numerous improvements to Total Freedom, from the plugins to the website but perhaps the greatest addition of the year was on August 8th, 2012. On that day, Finest created the Total Freedom Forum and it became an indispensable enhancement and communication tool for all things Total Freedom. As a result of the forums, developers, admins, and players were able to have more of an input into the operation and management of the server. This resulted in many enhancements to the Madgeek created Total Freedom plugin as well as a more organized admin selection / promotion system plus many other general improvements but perhaps the greatest benefit was having a sense of continuity, community and camaraderie.
On November 11, 2014, Total Freedom celebrated it's 4th birthday and to quote the founder in a birthday message, "I could not have imagined the server lasting for a year much less 4 amazing years. While I can’t say for sure, it’s not likely that many public servers have lasted as long, and the reason it has is because of our dedicated and long serving executive staff, genius developers, and the entire admin corps both past and present. Even though I’m the owner, nearly every aspect of the server, from the plugins to this forum is none of my making. It was countless others that built and maintained what we have today. While it is just a game, for many the experience of Total Freedom provided opportunities to better themselves, whether it was learning to code, be more creative, help others, be a friend, be a leader, running your own server or forum, or even overcoming difficulties in real life. As long as that continues to be the case, the desire to maintain Total Freedom will continue regardless of the challenges and obstacles."
In 2017, the ownership of Total Freedom was transferred from yours truly to Windows
In 2019, Windows was impeached and ownership was transferred to @creeperseth.
