I'm looking for a new DSLR camera with a budget of about $600 USD. I do not know much about the quality of the various models though. Anyone here have a DSLR to recommend?

Although it’s cliche, I really like my Canon Rebel T6. Ordered it off Amazon a while back and it works well for portraits and the occasional landscape. If I recall it was around $300 so that gives you a chance to get a lens or two within budget. The f1.8 I got for it is really nice and doesn’t look too far off from the f1.4 lenses that can be double the price.

I have a Rebel T1i which is very old but still works extremely well. I haven't used any of the newer Rebel's though

I ended up getting a Nikon D5600. I absolutely love it, but now I need to learn about operating SLR cameras. I already have the lens system figured out as well as how to adjust some of the settings.
Also need to find a good distance shooting lens.

I use an old Canon 350D which is very good for what I use it for and works with any modern canon lens that is of EF or EF-S mount. Do note that it takes an older CF card format and an adapter would be needed. These are not that expensive online used and would work very well for what you intend to use the camera for. Since the camera is compatible with new lenses, you can easily afford an inexpensive, but reliable 350D and purchase a lens like this (18-135mm would be well-suited for your needs) and still remain in budget.
