a very interesting video, even after the else if jokes thrown around. it surprises me that he worked on the game for 6 years and still hasn't managed to finish the first boss
this video is also interesting and explains the latter in detail and the personality of him in general, example being him firing his entire work team numerous times

for unity, i don't think else-ifs are necessarily harming the speed compared to switch statements however the whole architecture needs to be reworked it's insane how this light-looking game runs at like 30 fps on decent computers and that he denies it and just tells them to suck it up and buy a better pc.

Does Unity, one of the world's most popular game engines, not do any optimizations? unity does heavy c# optimisations however he has managed to fuck it somehow that makes it run really slow, albeit the massive amounts of imports per frame or some other issue i forgot to mention

Haven't watched the video yet, but good to keep this in mind around it.
Six years later he's still making 2k a month from his patreon, down from a peak of 5500. He's getting paid to not finish the game, it's how a lot of WIP games on patreon go. Development is slowed to increase the amount of time they're being paid.
Also TIL there's NSFW games on Patreon bringing in close to 100k a month...

Does Unity, one of the world's most popular game engines, not do any optimizations? Optimization doesn't necessarily mean unreadable (unless we're talking about JavaScript). You can write very well readable code which runs very fast, and depending on how high-level or low-level the language is the decompiled result will be similar to how it was originally written, and while many compilers optimize code it wouldn't be a way which makes it so very different from the original code or make it totally unreadable after a good decompilation. In the case of C#, I believe it's similar to Java in that decompilers will spit out very similar code to pre-compilation, and no compiler that I'm aware of will clean up the mistake of the developer to not write efficient code.
