oh yeah baby i'm back, after an insanely long stretch of cloudy nights and equipment issues, tonight was the first time i imaged in months. i got an hour's worth of data on the horsehead nebula, and i just tried to pull out as much detail as i could just to see what i was working with. i didn't calibrate it which is why it looks absolutely horrendous, i just wanted to pull as much data out of it as i could. i also took a picture of my laptop with my phone because i'm lazy, which doesn't really help the quality. just wanted to share because i think it looks super cool, and i want to get as much data on it as i can before orion is done for the season, so hopefully 8 or 9 hours in total. big things coming soon baby also lmk if you want to be added to a tag list for this type of stuff i guess, i'm not really expecting anyone to want to be on it lol, but just thought i'd offer

That's really cool. How do you do it? Also add me on the tag list please. @flammableflames i use a special mount that tracks the sky to compensate for the rotation of the earth, which allows me to keep the shutter on my camera open longer, allowing it to collect more light. this image here is made up of 68 2 minute exposures. i stack all of these images along with calibration frames in a program called deep sky stacker, which greatly reduces noise and provides much greater contrast. then i go into photoshop and manipulate the data to try to pull out as much detail as i can, and i can make it look however i want. that's the oversimplified version, it can get extremely complicated, and there have been times where i thought i understood what i was doing, and then was introduced to something else, and felt like i was back at square one

I sometimes do milky way photos or star circulation photos with my dad. We use Star Stax but I think I'll give deep sky stacker a try.
