yeah ik this isnt the best place to ask but idk maybe StevenNL2000 or Wild1145 can help. so i'm moving to a rural part of texas. yeehaw. the internet is hella expensive. 100mbps is nearly $200 a month (which is ideal for our family). we have a second trailer house, and since it's kind of far, we'd have to run an entirely different line to the house. that wouldn't really be a problem, except for the fact that even the most basic plan of 10mbps is over $100. no way i'm paying for that. my initial plan (before i heard about the prices) was to buy a few airport extremes off of ebay and use them as extenders. we have those at home and it's hands down the best experience i've had with a router. now that i heard about the prices, change of plan. so my new idea is to use access points. i have no clue how to set it up though. i've watched some tutorials and here's what i have. 1. Modem - first part, connects to ISP, not a big deal 2. Some kind of router (?) - I don't need a router since i'm going to be using access points. i assume you need to have some kind of router to assign addresses on the network. i don't know what it's called when you just need that and not a wifi signal from it. 3. PoE switch - i hook up a switch to the router. this is what i use to deploy the access points across my house. 4. the access points. our new house has some sort of speaker system in the ceiling. i assume i can just take those out and replace them with access points. i then run an ethernet cable from the switch underground to the second house, and i hook up an access point there. i'm still kind of confused though. i've been looking at ubiquit's access points, and they look good. but apparently i need a controller for them? and what about a router / what kind do i need? and also, there's a "cloud key" in the switch. what is that for?? i hear its supposed to manage the access points, but then why do you need a controller?? i plan to do this project in june when we get fiber internet. currently we have DSL and there's no point in doing it now when there may be better products in a few months. is there anything i'm missing or doing wrong? anything more efficient? pls advise lol edit: so i've been doing more research, and what the hell is a patch panel? why would i need to do that. couldn't i just plug the cables directly into the switch. and do the AP's have the ability to do a mesh network or no? i dont want 20 network ssids showing up

What sort of distance are we talking between the two properties, and do you own all the land in between?
I suspect the biggest issues you're gonna have is:
1) The length of the run, you'd probably want to run Fibre as Copper isn't great over long distance 2) That can be expensive. 3) It's also potentially time consuming to run a decent length of cable.
Your other option is to look at a point to point wireless antenna set, it's something I looked at to get faster internet to my hours, and you just make sure the two antennas are pointing at each other at the same height, and have one connected to the main network and the other connected to a switch to extend the network into the other property.
I'll see if I can't dig out a link to the one I was recommended.

Yeah, it won't be fibre copper, you'd need a fibre optic cable and a fibre optic compatible switch on either side. To be honest, given the distance I'd go for a point-to-point wireless antenna kit. Something potentially like store.ui.com/collections/wireless/products/unifi-building-to-building-bridge might be something to consider. It's more expensive than running just copper, but it gives up to 500M of range, and you don't have to dig that up... You could set all this up with DSL or Fibre, it won't make a difference. As to some of the other questions, you don't *need* a patch panel, it might just look nicer if you do run cables between the buildings, if you don't run cables I wouldn't personally bother. Depending on the state of the property you might already have patch panels to the wall ports if they have any. Also I'd personally use the router that you get, that'll have the modem and router included. You can always build your own router or buy a more expensive one down the road.

You can always build your own router or buy a more expensive one down the road. no, there are no ethernet cables in the wall. there are a bunch of telephone jacks in every room, but only a few of them work. i don't think i'm going to have ethernet ports in every room. just run cabling in the ceiling for access points. i looked at the thing you linked. that requires PoE for power. there are no ethernet ports in the second house, and i'd have to run an ethernet cable underground to a switch in the second house, right? correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think its worth it if it requires PoE on both ends. i'm looking at fiber optic switches, and they're expensive. i see there are adapters for fiber optic to ethernet cables. would that work just as well? i don't wanna have to spend hundreds more on a switch just so that it has a fiber optic port maybe i'm using the wrong search terms, but i can't find any fiber optic cables on amazon that are more than 10ft. i think i can use one of those ethernet extenders (or in this case fiber) to keep running cabling. seems more of a hassle to maintain, bc if one stops working, you have to test multiple cords

It will run over POE, you can get POE Injectors to inject the POE over ethernet instead of buying a POE Switch for example. And with that sort of solution it should in theory remove the need to dig the cable, but it really does depend on the distance. If in reality it ends up being anything less than probably like 20M, I'd run a few cables and trunking and all that shit because it'll be significantly cheaper and only take a day or so to do. If it's anything longer, I'd probably use a wireless solution so you can "beam" the internet into the other house and pick it up there into a switch and on to distribute to AP's / Wall ports where applicable. Yeah, a lot of normal switches (Enterprise ones anyway) have a few fibre ports for the backbone, and the rest are then copper ports. You can get media converters which convert from fibre to copper and back, and that would also work here, you copper out of the switch into a media converter with a fibre port out, run the cable out and under the ground with the fibre then into a media converter in the other house to convert back in to copper, and hook that into a switch in that house to then further distribute the network.
