Hey all,
I was just thinking about how we could increase player registration on the forum/discord - and let me know if this has been suggested before (it probably has seeing how it's a pretty basic plugin), but what do we think about an announcement plugin that advertises the forum, website, and discord every so "x" amount of time? Additionally, it could give tips and tricks on how to use certain plugins we have that players don't know about, as well as other things such as reminding players to link their discord to their MC account to reduce impersonation. Maybe we could use it to get players to vote for the server on server lists to increase player count?
This is definitely up for discussion and I know this could get annoying, but a quick message in the chat every so often may increase the amount of players taking advantage of the forum, discord, and plugins we have on the server shouldn't be too disruptive in my opinion.

Like I said in past threads, I'm all for allowing people to support us, but shouldn't we avoid getting to that point where we're doing what every other server does in terms of basically becoming beggars? Let's focus on the quality of what we provide to players instead of constantly worrying about advertising. Mark never worried about advertising and that was when the prime of the server was in terms of player numbers; because he only cared about the quality of the server and that's what got the server its base.
Address server stability & player freedom and we'll get more players, don't become beggars. What every server does is the "announce every 5 minutes and beg for people to vote for us", let's try and be different and do what works for us and if we do it right then we'll get more players the natural way with our advertising. If people love the server and want to support it, then point them in the direction of how they can, don't spam them into it. It's like how every youtuber 'has' to beg people to subscribe and hit the notification bell, it's unnecessary and probably even makes some people want to do it less, if people like you then they will do it on their own volition.

You are conflating two different concepts. YouTubers direct people to do something that they already know about, namely liking the video and subscribing. Adding announcements for our platforms is a way to make people aware they exist in the first place. It's quite hard to do something of your own volition if you don't know it's possible. Vouch.

Respectfully, I disagree. I'm not suggesting we add this plugin for us to become beggars. There's a difference between that and just advertising in-game features (which will make op's feel more "free"), as well as the server discord and forum to increase engagement, which in turn, will increase player sustainability (because the time in which players first join the server to the time they decide they want to play again is crucial). There is nothing wrong with asking players to vote every once in a while because let's be honest, the server is not going to grow unless we start focusing more on advertising. I agree with improving the stability of the server but we can concurrently improve and engage the players more so they feel more connected to the community. We are never going to stop working on the stability of the server because we have an entire custom plugin and with the consistent game updates, the server will never be perfect. I also agree with the "begging to vote" point you made, because I also agree that we shouldn't consistently beg for that and it will create a bad look for the server. Open to discussion!

Usually the advertisement page, which is where a lot of people learn about the server, already tells you how to vote and where our platforms are. Since when do we need announcements in order to do this when that has never been necessary? If people ask how they can support the server, then show them how to. We shouldn't continue to lose more aspects of the server that make us unique, announcements are what everybody else does and the truth is most people overlook them. Didn't we used to be one of the most popular servers on the list with just doing basic advertising?

My point is that when we didn't worry about advertising we were doing the best in terms of player numbers, we made sure that the server was stable & playable and it just worked out that way. Nowadays, I think there's too much worry about the amount of players and not enough worry about the quality of the server. All I'm saying is that we should prioritize increasing freedom, stability, & player satisfaction while simultaneously doing the basic advertising that we need. The second people start to only concern themselves with player number is the second quality starts to dip.

I'm not out here suggesting we begin a full out marketing plan and put all our efforts toward it. Yes, it will take a little bit to set-up, but it's harmless and completely automated which really can't do any harm. I'm all for increasing the stability of the server and I'm always adding my two cents on the forum regarding the topic (check my post history), but I do think we should really consider this to let players know about the plugins and capabilities of the server that they have no idea we have or how to use that could increase player experience and engagement. I get your POV though - appreciate the input.

Otherwise, an announcement would just be "This server has plugin X!", but that's redundant given that somebody can just type in a command to see what plugins exist and what commands exist for them, and if they can't do that then shouldn't the spawn have that kind of information?

Listen, it's just an idea to cover certain aspects of the server and like I said, for the purpose of engagement. I'm not saying this will solve and cover everything. We could go on all day/night about the "what if's" and "why don't we just do this". There are plenty of creative ways that announcements could be used and I'm just suggesting a few of them for the purpose of providing an example. Lastly, spawn can only be so informative because we are switching back and forth spawn builds all the time.

You are conflating two different concepts. YouTubers direct people to do something that they already know about, namely liking the video and subscribing. Adding announcements for our platforms is a way to make people aware they exist in the first place. It's quite hard to do something of your own volition if you don't know it's possible. Didn't we used to be one of the most popular servers on the list with just doing basic advertising? Surely a car with square wheels is more unique, that doesn't mean I want to drive one. There are certain basics you can afford without instantly becoming "like every other server". Also, I don't know where you're getting the idea that this is related to attracting new people because you only see announcements when you are literally already on the server. This would be for the players that got there by word of mouth and not the advertisement page so they become aware of the other platforms.

There are plenty of creative ways that announcements could be used and I'm just suggesting a few of them for the purpose of providing an example. Lastly, spawn can only be so informative because we are switching back and forth spawn builds all the time. There was a separate suggestion which was to add a hub world with a spawn with all of this information, but the suggestion was completely buried and killed. We solved this problem in the past by linking people to the website which had tons of useful plugin instructions, but every time we've updated the website we made sure to get rid of at least half of the useful information on it other than the basic shit like the admin list and links. You go there now and the only "support" on there is "a flatlands world exist!" and "you can change your game mode!" and then a basic explanation of build saving. Other than that you have an online player list which doesn't even work and errors when I go to the website and try to look at it. So I think that the solution is to just make our website useful like it was in the past, and link players to it when they join the game. That's what people did back then, and it worked. We can also go back to the hub world idea and make our spawn more useful by including some information that players can use, as well as a redirection to the site. This would not only be more efficient than announcements because it would display a lot more useful information that can be put into an announcement, and also I think people would be less likely to overlook it. And on the topic of that, I have no clue what happened to the hub world. I went to the old suggestion and it was said that "it would be implemented" and that code was being added to TFM for it, but I know that it was never implemented. Out of curiosity, I went to the TFM github to see what happened with that, and I noticed github.com/TFPatches/TotalFreedomMod/commit/aad33958f01ed66ce07371b04c9ad7d78c32c50b which removed the code which was added for it stating that it was no longer necessary. So there goes that idea pretty much, I have absolutely no idea why it was removed despite the amount of support it garnered on the suggestion thread.
