Hey guys, Thought I'd share this little trick with you. My computer came with Windows 10 Home. I wanted to upgrade it to Pro for Group Policy and BitLocker. Instead of paying for the upgrade, I actually figured out a cheaper way to get it (100% legal). You can use a Windows 7 or 8.1 Pro product key to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Copies of Windows 7 Professional go as low as $9 (but you might want to buy it from Microsoft, which is for about $150 I think) instead of paying $200 for Windows 10 Pro. I'm not sure if Windows XP Professional product keys work, but if they do they are only about $50. Just thought I'd let you know, as I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro from Home with my Windows 7 Professional product key (apparently I had never used it). Also today is the last day to upgrade to Windows 10 from the assistive technology loophole: www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

This is a very cheap way to ruin a machine. (Why would you ever 'upgrade' Windows 7 to 8/8.1/10?)

This is a very cheap way to ruin a machine. (Why would you ever 'upgrade' Windows 7 to 8/8.1/10?) In less than 2 year's time, you'll have to join us. Microsoft plans to cease patching security vulnerabilities on Windows 7 in January of 2020. I think you'll grow accustomed to Windows 10 pretty quickly. If it really doesn't float your boat, there's always Linux. I just forked out the $90 for a fresh copy of Windows. There's no point in buying a $40 bootleg copy, only to have it expire in a month or two. I don't have to worry about this, and I feel better about going legit. PROTIP: If you ever buy a copy of Windows, ALWAYS buy it direct from Microsoft. NEVER buy it from a store like Best Buy or Walmart. They will sell you an OEM key, a key that can only be used on one machine. If you decide to use a new motherboard, you will have to buy a completely new key. If you buy direct from Microsoft, you can move this key.

Enjoy your surveillance device, I'll be enjoying Windows 8.1 and even if I'm not using Windows 7 it's not gonna lose security patches, Microsoft isn't that stupid there will be a massive flood of backlash.

In fact, with open APIs like Vulkan, many games run BETTER on Linux because of how lightweight it is. For games incompatible with linux, there are options like liquidsky.tv or Steam in-home-streaming. Linux is used extensively for back-end operations. Don't underestimate its power.

If you buy direct from Microsoft, you can move this key. You're making false assumptions about my lifestyle. I use Windows 10 on my latest machine and don't enjoy it - and security updates won't force me to 'move over' in any way as I have been an avid user of the XP and 2000 [corporate] operating systems; and still use them to this day, without any problems. Nobody should use Linux if they don't know their way around the command line, and that's what Windows is for - the average consumer. Set yourself up with an antivirus programme on XP and you'll be fine; and you should probably know that 'end of support' doesn't necessarily mean they're drop security updates in their entirety, as we have recently witnessed an 'emergency' security patch released by Microsoft directed towards XP systems. End of support isn't [and never has been] an overwhelming reason to upgrade, especially when the modern equivalent is unsuitable. I've written much content contrary to your points, and the general takeaway from those numerous [security, functionality, compatibility, and design] problems with Windows 10 should be that it isn't safe to use. Microsoft has yet to release a security patch to their operating system that 'patches' the spyware that is their programme itself.

^ Ok for clarification for all of this useless bickering between Windows 7 vs. Windows 10, this is if you are ALREADY on Windows 10 and you want to upgrade your edition of Windows 10. I'm saying that you can buy a product key for an older version of Windows which run cheaper. Personally, I think that the Aero theme is pretty ugly, and like how Windows 10 looks. I've had so many problems with Windows 7 that I just wasn't going to try it again. Windows 10's performance has been flawless, and honestly there's not much Microsoft can do. Unplugging my mic is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and I don't even have a webcam. Companies need to think of a plan to move forward and leave behind Windows 7. IMO Microsoft should not have patched XP. Most of the targets were unpatched Windows 7 systems, and there's nothing wrong with using XP if you are not connecting it to the internet (e.g. card reader system, security camera TV). Companies that still use XP and swipe credit cards and manage them through XP are dumb. The organization that I work for still uses 7 (probably will upgrade their computers in 2020/2021 right after 7 ends support), but has a separate VeriFone reader for credit cards (not hooked up to a computer).

Or you can use the key management service (or is it server?) (KMS) (no, not meaning Kill MySelf) program that I use to activate the demo keys for free kek

The best way to have Windows 10 is to get either the Enterprise edition or Education edition (feature-wise they are the exact same thing). If you go to a college that does the Microsoft DreamSpark program, you can get Windows 10 Education edition for free. This is what I did. This version lets you disable updates, telemetry etc.

This is a very cheap way to ruin a machine. (Why would you ever 'upgrade' Windows 7 to 8/8.1/10?) 8 and 8.1 aren't that bad when you add ClassicShell... then it's basically just 7.
