Question is, why not just rent a VPS and host your own VPN server or smnthn? Because that creates a lot of problems that I wouldn't have if I just simply paid for a VPN. It's obviously more of a hassle, but on the other side, you can get a static IP (I'm sure some paid VPNs offer this as well, but it's probably unnecessarily expensive) with an ASN that doesn't immediately trigger VPN warnings, no tracing by anyone (especially if you go for a cheap dedicated server instead) and no logs. OVH, or at least So you Start, will get you multiple static IPv4s without monthly payment.

"Although I would like a VPN where I could do illegal things on it, not that I would, but that I could without getting caught" No commercial VPN can be trusted for the purposes of doing something that a government is intent on knowing about. This might interest you though as a future open source decentralized VPN solution: mysterium.networkYou could purchase a VPS and set up your own VPN ( e.g. github.com/Nyr/openvpn-install ) but the VPS provider is still subject to legal pressures. You can also use TOR with it's limitations and in combination with a VPN.

As for a VPS it would be a hassle. You still have the problem of the man in the middle when you create your own VPN on a VPS because you have to put a lot of trust into the VPS provider. It's easier to trust a VPN provider especially one with a trustworthy privacy policy, because you can sue for privacy policy violations.

Having a static IP is actually a reason why it would be bad, with a VPN you can be on one IP address then another so as to make you less traceable. And like I said in my other post it's either I trust a VPS provider or a VPN provider and I'd go with the VPN provider.

nordvpn is something i used for a while (i randomly got a free 1 year subscription even though i didn't pay anything) but now that it's expired i use windscribe because the trial data amount is 10 gigabytes so i have no problems with just making a new account over and over on it

The servers are also very slow, at least the free version they are.

I'd go for a known one like betternet. It works perfectly fine. I think that would do if you ask me.

The speeds are fairly good, and the privacy policy is very tight.
