Learning to build good looking structures in Minecraft can be difficult but hopefully this will help. This guide will show you what you can do to learn to build, reference, and eventually become a good builder yourself. Let's start with the first step.
Step #1 - Watching Building Videos - Watching videos on building is a great way to start. If you want to become a good builder, then you should start by watching some other good builders. I recommend not watching Step-For-Step videos on building things as this is doesn't really teach you anything about building. Instead, you should watch videos on building where you can receive good advice and tips that will help you in the long run. I will list some good YouTube channels on building advice at the bottom of the thread.
Step #2 - Inspiration - So you watched some videos and have some tricks up your sleeve? Great! Now you need to figure out what you are going to be building. Some people may not need this step if they have good imagination, but for people that have trouble coming up with ideas, this step should help. There are a two different ways that I will list here to go about getting ideas and inspiration for builds. One way is to look at other peoples builds on YouTube or in Minecraft and get your ideas from here. This is a quick way to get some inspiration and is usually the quickest route for getting ideas. The trouble with this method is that you are basically redesigning an already made build, and you didn't get the fun experience of building something new. This method is recommended if you want a quick and easy way to get started with a build or want to practice your skills.
If you want to create something new, then you should Google Search "Buildings" and click the images tab. Once you do this, you should spend some time looking through the images. If you see something you would really like to build, then save the image and start planning it out. The helpful thing about this method is that you can constantly reference your saved photograph to make sure you are recreating it accurately, or to make sure that the build you make is different then the original one. This method is recommended if you want a starting point for a build or you want to do recreations of real world buildings or structures in Minecraft.
Step #3 - Making Your Build - So you have watched some videos on building, and you have your idea. What comes next? This step also has two different methods. The first one is for the kind of person who likes to plan everything out and make really detailed plans. To start this method, you will want to get a pencil and paper, and sketch out the build with a pencil. Be sure you include the basic shape of the build, what blocks you will be using, major details, and other key components of the build. Next, you should go into a world and build mock up creations of the build you want to make. Eventually once you have your plan down, then you can begin building. This method is recommended if you want to be detail heavy and plan most things out.
The second method is recommended for people who like to improvise instead of planning. To start, go to an empty space in a Minecraft world and build mock up creations of your build. Scale up each mock up build you make, and eventually create the entire build. My apologies if this was too little detailed, but it is basically Method #1 without the sketching and paper-planning.
Step #3 - Challenging Yourself - This is good for critical thinking (a handy skill if you ever want to dabble in redstone) and working around problems. You should challenge yourself to build certain things, in certain ways, to improve your skills. This is also a fun way to build in a different way from the traditional Plan-Build method. Below are some challenges you could do to help sharpen your building skills.
-This is a suggestion challenge by _Windows - Re-make real life structures in Minecraft. Although I listed something similar earlier in this guide, this challenge is to search up a famous landmark or building and recreate it in Minecraft. Maybe make a replica of the Taj Mahal, or build your very own Central Park. Try it out, see what happens!
-Build only out of one type of wood and cobblestone. In this challenge you must build something out of only one type of wood (and it's blocks, eg Oak Wood, Oak stairs, etc) and cobblestone.
-30 Day Challenge - In this challenge you will build a small house, but you will only place two blocks every day for thirty days. You can use any blocks to make the best house you can in thirty days. Half Slabs each count as 1/2 block, so you can place four half slabs a day, or two full blocks a day. This challenge will help you learn patience.
- No Wood - Build anything such as a house or a cave with any blocks with the exception of all wood blocks. No using any type of wood or any wood blocks such as stairs and fences.
- Statue - Build a statue of your skin and detail it with 3D hair or 3D shoes.
- Memory - Build things from memory. Maybe your old dog? Or maybe it could be your own skin! Just build anything from memory without looking at it or searching it on the internet.
Here are those building channels I promised!
Grian - You can view his channel by clicking here. - Grian is listed here because he doesn't do Step-By-Step building tutorials. Instead, he gives inspiration and ideas on how to incorporate things into your own builds. He also likes to make fun videos like structure transformations.
FyreUK - You can view this channel by clicking here. - FyreUK no longer makes Minecraft videos but is still good to watch to reference builds and get inspiration and ideas. Unlike Grian he does not have tips and tricks and is mostly a build showcase channel. I recommend watching FyreUK to get an idea of the build quality required to become a Master Builder, or to get ideas.
MORE CHANNELS TO COME SOON!
I hope you enjoyed this guide, and I will be adding on to it. If anyone has any suggestions please PM me or post on this thread and let me know.
Cheers!
Master Builder Help:
Thank you to Harry Hart (Galahad) for the idea.
If figuring out things YOURSELF if not your preferred style, then try to work with an official TotalFreedom Master Builder to help you learn the ropes.
To help me assign you to a Master Builder please fill out this template and post it on this thread or PM it to me.
1. What is your IGN?
2. What is your timezone?
3. What types of builds are you hoping to learn? (e.g Redstone, Exterior, Interior, etc)
If you are a Master Builder that would like to volunteer for this please fill this out (just to help me match people) and post it here or PM it to me.
