Communism has never been actually attempted. Lenin planned on it but never got a chance because of Stalin. What has been attempted are authoritarian left brutal dictatorships. The Soviet Union was successful after the Stalin era but then capitalists (like Gorbachev) gained power. Not a disagreement, just facts. It has been attempted, it has just never worked out the way "it's supposed to". To even use your own example, Lenin attempted it but died before he got a chance to see his vision through. When Stalin took over he still went with the ideology that Lenin espoused, but Stalin was paranoid and the State suffered for it until the day it dissolved. And calling Gorbachev a capitalist is a statement far removed from reality. Lenin died before he could even attempt it, he gained the power, but wasn't able to attempt it. Stalin didn't give a shit about Lenin's ideology, he was a brutal sociopath who just wanted to gain power and he threw out all the progress Lenin made and militarized the country killed millions of people and sent to concentration camps, not exactly communism. Gorbachev isn't an extreme capitalist but he's not a communist at all, he gained power so that he could throw out communism and replace it with a social democracy, which is a step BACKWARDS and ended up destroying the union because he didn't know how to execute it properly because he wasn't a good leader. Communism in theory is supposed to be the ultimate achievement to social democracy.
